Chapter 18: Mercury Tower, New York City, Thursday 10 May
Johnthen Trent is as good as his word. Again. I sit in the kitchen wearing his red silk shirt, which feels enormous, while he feeds me scallops with wild rice. I find I finally have an appetite. I’m in that post-orgasmic mood to stick around and enjoy his company with the food and wine, admiring the sunset. Jonathan seems more relaxed too. It feels like we could curl up in our PJ’s for a couple of hours. Johnthen feels it too, but no rest for the wicked.
‘If you’d been here yesterday, we could have taken it easier, gone at our own pace,’ he says. He doesn’t mention that “going at our own pace” would probably mean scallops, more of his exquisite wine and some even more exquisite activities in his bedroom. ‘As it is, we need to get moving.’ He hurries me mercilessly into the dressing room once more. Johnthen has made a commitment for tonight, and he believes in doing things properly.
Right now I don’t feel like it, but I’ve never been to an album launch party before. This is going to be something of an education.
The people at the door were the “dressing crew”, because tonight Johnthen is going to be “seen”. Johnthen explains that he rarely shows his face where he’s expected to. He’s the kind of guy who did network TV interviews after his tour, rather than before to drum up publicity. And he says what he thinks, instead of what will create some news. His charitable work is private, not a photo opp. He’s almost an anti-celeb.
All this means that when he does turn up at the album launch for one of his acts, it’s really going to make a stir. There will be dozens of paparazzi, and that’s why he has a dressing crew here. They’ve brought with them clothes racks on wheels with designer clothes for him to try on.
Astonishingly, there is also a rack of clothes for me to try. God knows how much it all costs – or is it all provided free in the hope that Johnthen will wear some lucky designer’s creations? He's certain to look fabulous in whatever he chooses. As for me however…
There’s a man called Gary, about thirty and slim, five ten. He’s an attractive guy in an androgynous way and he’s wearing a black lamb’s wool sweater; a good-looking man, with all the things a girl could want. When Johnthen’s around – so much bigger, more mysterious and dangerous somehow – Gary’s perfectly packaged appearance pales a little. He’s certainly got something about him, though, and we hit it off straight away. I’d expected someone more flamboyant, with way-out hair and make-up, and the whole fashion-victim look. In fact he is understated in black slacks and a classic, slim-fit black shirt. There may be a light touch of eyeliner about him, but who am I to judge? Then there are two women, Tanya and Melinda, who are there to dress us and do our hair and make-up.
